It was predicted that the number of residents living in Hoyerswerda will diminish from the original 70 000 to around 30 000 by 2015. In the years leading up our intervention, many empty 11-storey buildings in the centre of Hoyerswerda were demolished. The new vast empty tracts of land threatened to destroy the ‘centre’ of the town.

Our project proposal for the 2003 competition – which has now been realised - aims to preserve the remaining buildings and even increases the number of floors. At a corner of the central area a landmark in remembrance the demolished buildings is built. The building is meant for high quality residential use and a lot of greenery.
The roof has become a public viewing platform and roof terrace for the residents through the addition of another floor.

The plant-facade of the building is a continuation of the valuable trees in the surrounding park. Thus green architecture sheds a positive light on the green wastelands in the middle of the town. A new combination of guiding principles is created for Hoyerswerda: Modern / Town / Landscape.
