With the „ZukunftsWerkStadt Leinefelde“ project (word play on Future lab / Working city of the future), Leinefelde became a decentralized location for the Expo 2000 as early as 1996. Since 90% of the building stock of the former East-German city consists of prefabricated “Plattenbau”, the modernisation of this stock was top priority from the beginning. Based on a 1995 master plan that Büro GRAS Darmstadt developed for an international competition, the southern part of the city of Leinefelde was reorganised and the “Plattenbau” was refitted.

Our winning proposal for the Hahn Herzstraße area (‘Physicists Quarter’) was realised between 1998 and 2001. At the same cost as standard refurbishment, we implemented a list of different measures that were tailored to the particular scale of the intervention: Establishing a clearly defined neighbourhood with differentiated courtyards; Access and design for a new neighbourhood square; a with roofs spanning multiple residences to amplify the scale of the overall project; an elaboration of the prefabricated “Plattenbau” system to offer different typologies of buildings and housing units; development of a modular design system with components such as entrances, balconies and interior designs; the addition of new buildings that function as access points (lobby, lifts) for existing stock; on-site recycling facilities; the incorporation of recycled materials into the surface of the square to create step-free access.
