Conceived, curated and realised by Muck Petzet, the exhibition introduced a value system of waste management, of avoidance, reuse and recovery, into the context of architecture. In Germany, working on existing buildings has become the most important task for architects. Our work as architects is more and more about resizing, revitalising, converting or completing. The existing building stock - architecture itself - has to be recognised as the most important resource for the development of our built environment. The exhibition presented 16 projects showcasing a new attitude of affirmation and respect towards existing architecture.

The exhibition itself was exemplary of this affirmative approach: the perception of the often-demonised 'Nazi'-pavilion was changed with the most minimal means. Simply by turning the key, the main entrance was blocked and an inconspicuous ramp turned a former fire exit into the main entrance. These minimal interventions broke the sacral and axially symmetric composition of the pavilion, enabling an exhibition across un-hierarchically interlocked rooms. There was no purpose-built exhibition architecture and the large-scale pictures by Erica Overmeer were directly wallpapered onto the walls of the pavilion. The exhibition design by Konstantin Grcic appropriated typical Venetian street furniture - such as the high water footbridges and park benches - and avoided any explicit newly designed objects. The graphic design of Thomas Mayfried and Swantje Grundler contributed another subtle local reference: the exhibition typography was inspired by the Vaporetto CI from the 1970s.

In the exhibition and the adjoining catalogue, 11 strategies of affirmative transformation were researched and presented according to the RRR system, displaying examples ranging from immaterial revaluations due to shifting perceptions up to total material makeovers. The three avoidance strategies: perception, maintenance and behaviour were followed by the 'classical' transformation strategies of renovation, conversion, infill, redesign, subtraction and addition as well as material and Gestalt-recycling.

The 16 positions and strategies presented in the exhibition show the immense creative and architectural potential of working with the existing building stock. Reduce / Reuse / Recycle exhibits projects and attitudes of architects positively absorbing, strengthening and amplifying existing architecture - understanding the seemingly profane and nondescript as a source of inspiration and an impulse for development.

The following architects and offices were presented in the exhibition: AFF Architekten, Berlin / AMUNT Architekten Martenson und Nagel Theissen / Atelier Kempe Thill architects and planners, Rotterdam / Brandlhuber + ERA, Emde, Schneider, Berlin / Diener & Diener Architekten, Basel, Berlin / Urs Füssler, Berlin/Jörg Leeser, Köln / Heinle, Wischer und Partner, Stuttgart / Hild und K Architekten, München / knerer und lang Architekten, Dresden / LIN Finn Geipel + Guilia Andi Architects Urbanists, Berlin / Meixner Schlüter Wendt Architekten, Frankfurt / Robertneun™, Berlin / Schulz & Schulz Architekten, Leipzig / Staab Architekten, Berlin
