selective interventions to restore its original state
The bungalow was created in 1959, inspired by American examples. Since then it has been remodelled several times. Among other things, the floor tiles and bathroom fittings were replaced during the 70s and 80s in the fashion of the time. Of the original interior hardly anything remains. This latest modernization is aimed at regaining the formal and material qualities of the original building, while upgrading the utilities to current standards. All subsequently unwanted fixtures and materials were removed and replaced with original materials, such as travertine flooring, parquet, mosaic tiles and bronze. The detailing of new construction elements, like stair railings and interior doors, was either modelled after the original design or hidden from sight. The built-in elements from the 1950s (cupboards, lighting) were repaired or enhanced. What remained of the original furniture was integrated into the new interior. Newly designed furnishings and fixtures (i.e. shelving, closets, toilet) blends in naturally. Spatial interventions have been done to improve the weaknesses of the existing design: A doorway replaces the service hatch between kitchen and dining room. The door is integrated into the existing wood panelling. To enlarge the kitchen, the toilets in the hallway have been removed. And the basement is converted into a fully functional floor by lowering part of the garden and installing bigger windows. The insulation was improved; the building services and bathrooms renewed. And the interior decoration was completed with unique lighting and furniture. Imprint: Muck Petzet Architekten Architekt BDA Dipl.-Ing.
